Konta Signs was founded in 1967, in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. In October 1990, owner Hennie Botha established Kontra Signs Cape Town cc in Paarden Eiland, Western Cape. Thereafter, Kontra Signs rapidly expanded it’s operations, which included a relocation of premises to Stikland, Bellville from which it, to date, renders a formidable service to all business sectors, both locally and internationally.

The word Kontra, according to the dictionary means: “Anti”, “opposite”. When entering the sign industry, it was my intention to change the norm.

The sign industry in a typical country town consisted of:

Sign writer, a one man show with a small truck, ladders, paint and a variety of brushes. Vacuum forming for number plates and small notices was limited to cities only. Illuminated signs was popular and could only be rented from international conglomerates such as Claude Neon.

My approach anti, the best establishment norm, was as follows:

Signwriting was replaced by cutting letters and emblems from Perspex, fiberglass etc.
After a visit to Mr. Bartholomew in Pretoria, Simon and I saw enough to build our own vacuum forming equipment.
I manufactured and sold illuminated signs with great success.

Again Simon and I built the necessary equipment to do silkscreen printing.
I entered the safety sign market with great success!
I intended to enter the traffic sign market, but 3M Co. refused to supply me with reflective material at a discount.
I then imported 40 rolls from Japan, to the detriment of 3M Co.
They immediately granted me convertorship and I was in the market.

I therefore succeeded in the late 60’s to bring about a contraposition in the industry and thereby justifying the name Kontra.
